OD's open-source week: how it works

Every month, we host an open-source week, where we bring together awesome projects and open up a variety of issues—from beginner-friendly to advanced. Maintainers post issues that need tackling, and contributors dive in to make their mark.

The goal?

Simple: welcome newcomers, promote open-source contribution, and give regular contributors a chance to explore new projects. We’re also here to help projects onboard fresh talent and push their goals forward!

By the Numbers:

  • 1,900+ OD Community and growing!
  • 200+ projects have participated.
  • +86% PRs completed.
  • 35+ meet-ups worldwide.
  • More than $400,000 in rewards distributed!

During the open-source week, rewards are sent for eligible contributions and a community is created 😄. The idea is to continue supporting the open-source journey, which we know can sometimes feel lonely.

We also team up with local communities to create meetups where you can meet fellow contributors and feel supported ❤️.

Why Participate in the open-source week?

During the events, you’re not just exploring projects, developing your skills or getting straight up feedbacks from maintainers—you’re becoming part of a community that supports each other. Open source can feel lonely at times, but we’ve got you covered. We even team up with local communities to host meet-ups where you can connect with fellow contributors in person!

How to Join the Next Event

  1. Sign up on OnlyDust if you haven’t already. This is a very important step in order to receive rewards and staying in touch.
  2. Register for the open-source week on the Hackathon page.
  3. The open-source week runs for 10 days, with the first few days being the most important. Be available and reactive to get issues assigned quickly.

How to Get Assigned to an Issue

  1. Apply directly on the page. Applying through GitHub won’t work!
  2. Once assigned, get started! Update the community within the first two days to show your progress. If you go silent, maintainers will reassign the task—don’t let that happen!
  3. Finish your task by the 10th day of the event. Maintainers have two extra days to finalize anything left over.
💡
Pro Tip for Contributors: When applying, don’t just say "I want this issue." Introduce yourself and explain how you plan to tackle it. Show the project lead that you’re serious and ready to contribute!
