Shoutout to contributor Solene for this article. Since 2020, Solene has been actively engaged in Web3 as a builder and recently joined the Starknet ecosystem as Starknet.ID team member. She is also involved in bringing some women into this space through H.E.R. DAO Global.

Welcome to the Starknet Quest journey! This piece is your map to understanding how Starknet Quest is not only making waves but also building bridges for developers to connect and thrive. Starknet Quest helps protocols attract and retain users by creating gamified quest experiences on Starknet. The ultimate goal for them is to make a public marketing token/reward distribution tool for the Starknet ecosystem.

So let’s have a look!

Starknet Quest has gained significant traction to become the marketing tool for protocols on Starknet. The following numbers illustrate this perfectly:

  • Almost 3 million NFT minted
  • +610,000 unique owners
  • 30 quests released with the biggest Starknet protocols (Nostra, Avnu, Ekubo, zkLend, Braavos…)

Note that through OnlyDust, they’re currently looking for front-end developers as contributors to join their community! Now, read on to learn more about their vision and how you can contribute to Starknet Quest.

1️⃣
CURRENT STATE

A/ IN WEB2

Effective onboarding

In Web2 for user acquisition, marketing budgets are distributed across various channels and strategies to maximize reach, engagement, and conversion. A significant portion of this budget often goes towards digital advertising on platforms such as Google Ads, social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn), and display networks. The results of these strategies are highly efficient and that’s the reason why these centralized applications are now part of the biggest companies in the world.

The Big Tech Companies Hegemony

Data is the most powerful tool to create efficient strategies in marketing. However, in Web2 these are controlled only by centralized actors and you have to pay to access it. We can see below that GAFAMs are collecting a great deal of data about us to create value. Web3 appears to be an alternative to this control, as users’ data is accessible on-chain and free.

B/ IN WEB3

The marketing budget goes to users through airdrop and token incentives

Airdrops and token incentives have emerged as a powerful acquisition strategy to foster community engagement and drive user adoption in Web3. Acquiring users through this strategy can be quite costly, necessitating a comprehensive approach to ensure its effectiveness. The real user’s acquisition cost is stupidly high cause airdrops are now heavily farmed by bots. In this context, we think the budget allocated to onboarding new users could cost less and be directed toward the right users by using public on-chain data.

Suboptimal allocation of rewards due to an inadequate data analysis

In reality, they think that airdrop and classic token incentives are not the best long-term solution. When executed successfully, they can amplify network effects and enhance the value of the associated token. However, if the execution falls short, there's a risk of losing 90% of acquired users and leaving little budget for further growth initiatives.

By using a system that enables more rigorous analysis of user data as in Web2, protocols can invest small, analyze, and improve the product and marketing. On-chain data serves as the gateway to reaching the right users and delivering value to them. In contrast, Web2 companies typically rely on paid services such as Facebook and Google for user targeting.

Let’s take an example. If Aave intends to launch a marketing campaign to attract new users, they could target all Compound (an Aave competitor) users, offering them a reward of X dollars for transferring their liquidity. This approach not only ensures a higher likelihood of attracting users genuinely interested in the platform but also demonstrates the transformative potential of Web3 in revolutionizing digital marketing strategies.

Thus, in Web2, user onboarding is effective, but the marketing value —meaning the Web2 marketing budget— is largely spent on paying targeted ads to Big Tech companies. Conversely, in Web3, value is directly redistributed to users, but it lacks efficiency in reward distribution, despite all data being accessible on-chain and free of charge.

THE STARKNET QUEST SOLUTION

Starknet Quest prioritizes Starknet protocols and establishes a robust user base essential for their enduring success. By enabling protocols to engage users directly and allocate tokens judiciously to targeted users rather than bots, Starknet Quest ensures efficient utilization of resources. Consequently, this quest system facilitates highly effective Web3 marketing, enhancing protocol visibility and user adoption.

A/ QUEST FRAMEWORK TO ONBOARD USERS

What’s the quest framework?

The quest framework represents a significant advancement in the execution of airdrop and token incentives strategies, emerging as the most effective approach due to the following reasons:

  • Retroactive Capability: Enables precise targeting of authentic users utilizing existing on-chain data.
  • Conditional Nature: Users are required to onboard onto the product, ensuring active engagement.
  • High-Velocity Recurrence: this isn't a one-time occurrence; rather, multiple quests can be conducted to understand what strategies are effective and which ones are not.

What’s the reward process?

Starknet Quest presents a comprehensive reward system tailored to engage users and incentivize their participation within the platform. Participants earn a unique NFT upon completing a quest session, serving as a digital badge of achievement and symbolizing their progress into the Starknet ecosystem. Moreover, users have the chance to enter raffles for token rewards (USCD or STRK) upon completing specific quests. In the future, protocols will be able to reward specific users for quest completion. For instance, users will claim directly rewards (i.e 10 STRK) after quest completion.

Rewards on Starknet Quest

Protocols can use their data to customize their airdrop. For example, they can strategically target users who have participated in their quest campaigns for future airdrops, like for the zkLend airdrop previously explained. In this instance, users were rewarded with a boosted airdrop multiplier as recognition for their past engagement.

B/ QUEST GAMIFICATION TO RETAIN USERS

Following user acquisition, protocols encounter challenges in retaining Web3 users. Recognizing this, Starknet Quest has introduced gamification mechanisms aiming to retain users with the Starknet ecosystem.

On-chain reputation visualization with the Starknet City

Starknet Quest user can visualize their on-chain reputation through the creation of a Starknet City, a digital land where users can unlock various buildings representing different protocols. As users interact with these protocols (AVNU, Carbonable…), their city expands, with each interaction resulting in the addition of new buildings. These buildings serve as a representation of the user's diverse interests within the realm of DeFi, gaming, and beyond. Ultimately, the user's land within the Starknet City becomes a dynamic visual representation of their on-chain reputation on Starknet, growing in size and complexity as they achieve more quests and accomplishments on the platform. Users can conveniently monitor their overall progress on the Starknet Quest platform by visiting their land and further expanding it by undertaking new quests and unlocking additional achievements.

Create a social engagement using a leaderboard

Starknet Quest incorporates a dynamic leaderboard system that serves to recognize and celebrate the achievements of top-performing users within the community. By showcasing the most successful participants, this feature not only fosters healthy competition but also cultivates a strong sense of accomplishment among users. The leaderboard serves as a motivating factor, encouraging active participation and engagement with the quest system.

EXAMPLE OF A QUEST AND ITS STEPS

A Quest is a set of tasks that a user can do. On completing a quest they are eligible to get an NFT as proof of completion and possible tokens as a reward. Each Quest is created by one of the leading apps on Starknet and is reviewed by the maintainers on the repo before publishing on the application.

Here is an example of a quest with Ekubo, where you can find different steps to complete for getting your Starknet Quest NFT, and also get a chance to earn rewards from the protocol.

1/ Start with a quiz to test your knowledge of a protocol

2/ Make an on-chain action using the protocol

3/ Make a social media action
